CHAPTER 18_HAWAII

http://gsabulletin.gsapubs.org
When comparing the city of Las Vegas to the state of Hawaii one can conclude that both are popular destinations for vacationing, but they both lack the category on comparing both places as a whole. The one thing that you can compare the two are volcano's. Both destination have volcanoes surrounding them. Like for instance near Las Vegas the Timber Mountain volcano is 1675 meters in
elevation. The Timber Mountain volcano is not the only volcano in Nevada, there are more than ten most of which are inactive. The main difference between these volcanoes and the volcanoes of the Hawaiian islands is that they are considered to be shield volcanoes made of fluid lava flows. Even though Las Vegas and Hawaii share a common interest with each other, both are universally different from one other in so many ways.

CHAPTER 16_THE NORTH PACIFIC COAST

Las Vegas and the north Pacific coast have nothing in common physically or culturally, but many of the landmarks in the North Pacific Coast can also be seen on the Las Vegas strip. With many tourists traveling to Las Vegas many hotels some themed more than others, offer more attractions than others. Like for instance In Vegas, the Mirage hotel occupies an imitation volcano that erupts every night, and continues to entertain the tourists passing by. The volcano from the Mirage hotel is being compared to Mount St. Helen's. Besides it's physical beauty both are rather boring, but one does more damage then the other. Another landmark that has been reproduced into the Las Vegas strip is the Space Needle of Seattle. The space needle of Seattle is being compared to the Stratosphere hotel, both offer amenities such as shopping, excellent views, and of course dining. The upside to the stratosphere hotel is that it has thrilling rides on top of the tower.

California is home to many wildfires each year, but Las Vegas has another type of fire that invades the city, hotel fires. One of the biggest hotel fires is the MGM fire. The MGM fire occurred on November 21, 1980. The fire was caused by an electrical fault fueled by flammable materials. The fire was so big that the damage of the fire took the lives of 85 people and injured 650 of the guests. Most of the injuries and deaths were due to an immense amount of toxic smoke because of the fires fumes burning in the air. Even though Las Vegas hotel fires are different from the wildfires that the residents of California have to deal with, they both take peoples lives, and destroy millions of dollars spent on the Fancy hotels built in Las Vegas.

CHAPTER 14_THE SOUTHWEST BORDER AREA

Las Vegas is not included in the Southwest Border Area. The population of Las Vegas is also very culturally diverse with many different ethnicity's in the area. On the other hand Vegas does have their share of Hispanic Americans living in the area. In the 2000 census Hispanics made up 24.9% of the population, this number is high in Nevada's eyes, but nothing compares to the counties in New Mexico and Texas.Even though their is a high volume of Hispanics that have been immigrating from Central and South America due to the fact that the service, ranching, and mining industries have significantly grown. The city is not complaining about the high volume of immigrants that have found their way to Las Vegas, if anything they are more than grateful as there is a need for people to work. Luckily for the immigrants that choose to make Las Vegas their new home, they can strive on making a better life for them and their family for the years to come.

CHAPTER 13_THE EMPTY INTERIOR

The Empty Interior is the region that is home to Las Vegas. According to our textbook, Las Vegas is owned by The Bureau of Land Management and other Federal agencies (258). In other words none of the Las Vegas land is owned by the public. The reason that the government controls most of the land is because Las Vegas does not really contain national parks, or even have a natural environment. Even though Las Vegas does not really have an environmental section to preserve, one thing that Las Vegas does have is alot of tourists. Las Vegas economy is fueled by its gaming industry which brings over $800 million in revenue a month. Legalised in 1931, gambling became more than just a game of high stakes, it became an industry. Even though many people are still visiting Vegas the most recent economic recession has taken its toll on the city. Gambling revenues are down 4 percent, and many construction projects have been placed on hold. Despite all of the financial restraints, Las Vegas has still managed to keep up with the recession and still display what we call the theme of Las Vegas which is the bright lights of the city.

CHAPTER 12_THE GREAT PLAINES AND PRAIRIES

iamaudi.com
When looking at Las Vegas and the Great Plains At first no one would ever suspect that their similar to each other. The only characteristics that both the Great Plains and Vegas may share is that they are relatively dry in terms of the land that they belong to, and the fact that they have made the most of the land that they were given. In our text book it explains that "Once it was a dry wasteland and now it is a land full of rich opportunities." pg 230 The Great Plains has turned the dry land in their area into an agricultural gold mine whereas Las Vegas turned their dry land into a major tourist attraction. They have alot of similarities in their climate with both areas having very hot summers and colder than normal winters. Unlike the Great Plains, Vegas does not have any severe/extreme weather. The people of Las Vegas have only one severe weather problem, during the summer temperatures can get to a scorching 120 degrees, which is nothing in comparison to the blizzards, tornadoes, and Chinook winds in the Great Plains.

CHAPTER 11_ THE AGRICULTURAL CORE

questpointsolarsolutions.com
Las Vegas is no where near the agricultural core, nor is it even the same. The main economic activity in Vegas is tourism, but the brightly lit city does have plans to expand their horizons and create a vertical farm. A vertical farm is a building that is placed in the middle of an urban area, and houses an indoor farm. With Vegas being famous for its skyscrapers the vertical farm will just be another building and fit right in. With 30 storeys housing 100 different crops. The project is estimated to cost $200 million. Even though Vegas is still growing and expanding, Vegas will gain a few more Eco-friendly tourists that they may have lost due to the immense amount of electricity they use.
