CHAPTER 18_HAWAII

http://gsabulletin.gsapubs.org
When comparing the city of Las Vegas to the state of Hawaii one can conclude that both are popular destinations for vacationing, but they both lack the category on comparing both places as a whole. The one thing that you can compare the two are volcano's. Both destination have volcanoes surrounding them. Like for instance near Las Vegas the Timber Mountain volcano is 1675 meters in
elevation. The Timber Mountain volcano is not the only volcano in Nevada, there are more than ten most of which are inactive. The main difference between these volcanoes and the volcanoes of the Hawaiian islands is that they are considered to be shield volcanoes made of fluid lava flows. Even though Las Vegas and Hawaii share a common interest with each other, both are universally different from one other in so many ways.

CHAPTER 16_THE NORTH PACIFIC COAST

orbitz.com
Las Vegas and the north Pacific coast have nothing in common physically or culturally, but many of the landmarks in the North Pacific Coast can also be seen on the Las Vegas strip. With many tourists traveling to Las Vegas many hotels some themed more than others, offer more attractions than others. Like for instance In Vegas, the Mirage hotel occupies an imitation volcano that erupts every night, and continues to entertain the tourists passing by. The volcano from the Mirage hotel is being compared to Mount St. Helen's. Besides it's physical beauty both are rather boring, but one does more damage then the other. Another landmark that has been reproduced into the Las Vegas strip is the Space Needle of Seattle. The space needle of Seattle is being compared to the Stratosphere hotel, both offer amenities such as shopping, excellent views, and of course dining. The upside to the stratosphere hotel is that it has thrilling rides on top of the tower.

CHAPTER 15_ CALIFORNIA

California is home to many wildfires each year, but Las Vegas has another type of fire that invades the city, hotel fires. One of the biggest hotel fires is the MGM fire. The MGM fire occurred on November 21, 1980. The fire was caused by an electrical fault fueled by flammable materials. The fire was so big that the damage of the fire took the lives of 85 people and injured 650 of the guests. Most of the injuries and deaths were due to an immense amount of toxic smoke because of the fires fumes burning in the air. Even though Las Vegas hotel fires are different from the wildfires that the residents of California have to deal with, they both take peoples lives, and destroy millions of dollars spent on the Fancy hotels built in Las Vegas.

CHAPTER 14_THE SOUTHWEST BORDER AREA

bergaliaboys.com
earlyvegas.com
Las Vegas is not included in the Southwest Border Area. The population of Las Vegas is also very culturally diverse with many different ethnicity's in the area. On the other hand Vegas does have their share of Hispanic Americans living in the area. In the 2000 census Hispanics made up 24.9% of the population, this number is high in Nevada's eyes, but nothing compares to the counties in New Mexico and Texas.Even though their is a high volume of Hispanics that have been immigrating from Central and South America due to the fact that the service, ranching, and mining industries have significantly grown. The city is not complaining about the high volume of immigrants that have found their way to Las Vegas, if anything they are more than grateful as there is a need for people to work. Luckily for the immigrants that choose to make Las Vegas their new home, they can strive on making a better life for them and their family for the years to come.

CHAPTER 13_THE EMPTY INTERIOR

casinogamblingrules.com
The Empty Interior is the region that is home to Las Vegas. According to our textbook, Las Vegas is owned by The Bureau of Land Management and other Federal agencies (258). In other words none of the Las Vegas land is owned by the public. The reason that the government controls most of the land is because Las Vegas does not really contain national parks, or even have a natural environment. Even though Las Vegas does not really have an environmental section to preserve, one thing that Las Vegas does have is alot of tourists. Las Vegas economy is fueled by its gaming industry which brings over $800 million in revenue a month. Legalised in 1931, gambling became more than just a game of high stakes, it became an industry. Even though many people are still visiting Vegas the most recent economic recession has taken its toll on the city. Gambling revenues are down 4 percent, and many construction projects have been placed on hold. Despite all of the financial restraints, Las Vegas has still managed to keep up with the recession and still display what we call the theme of Las Vegas which is the bright lights of the city.

CHAPTER 12_THE GREAT PLAINES AND PRAIRIES

iamaudi.com
When looking at Las Vegas and the Great Plains At first no one would ever suspect that their similar to each other. The only characteristics that both the Great Plains and Vegas may share is that they are relatively dry in terms of the land that they belong to, and the fact that they have made the most of the land that they were given. In our text book it explains that "Once it was a dry wasteland and now it is a land full of rich opportunities." pg 230 The Great Plains has turned the dry land in their area into an agricultural gold mine whereas Las Vegas turned their dry land into a major tourist attraction. They have alot of similarities in their climate with both areas having very hot summers and colder than normal winters. Unlike the Great Plains, Vegas does not have any severe/extreme weather. The people of Las Vegas have only one severe weather problem, during the summer temperatures can get to a scorching 120 degrees, which is nothing in comparison to the blizzards, tornadoes, and Chinook winds in the Great Plains.

CHAPTER 11_ THE AGRICULTURAL CORE

questpointsolarsolutions.com
Las Vegas is no where near the agricultural core, nor is it even the same. The main economic activity in Vegas is tourism, but the brightly lit city does have plans to expand their horizons and create a vertical farm. A vertical farm is a building that is placed in the middle of an urban area, and houses an indoor farm. With Vegas being famous for its skyscrapers the vertical farm will just be another building and fit right in. With 30 storeys housing 100 different crops. The project is estimated to cost $200 million. Even though Vegas is still growing and expanding, Vegas will gain a few more Eco-friendly tourists that they may have lost due to the immense amount of electricity they use.

CHAPTER 10_ THE SOUTHERN COASTLANDS

blog.thomasfrank.org
riversedge.wikispaces.com
Nevada like many other states are nowhere near the coast. Even though there is not any major water bodies near the city of Las Vegas there are a couple just outside of it. Lake Mead is in Clark County and holds 28.5 million acre feet of water. Lake Mead is one of the largest man made lakes and reservoirs in the United States, and it gets its water from the closest major river, The Colorado River. Lake Mead, like many/most water bodies in the World, is drying up due to global warming, increased demand, and natural affects such as evaporation. The lake, as of May 2009, was only holding 43% of its capacity, and researchers have claimed that the lake may dry up within the next decade.

CHAPTER 9_ THE CHANGING SOUTH

truemagicnumbers.com
Las Vegas Nevada and the south are two very different regions. Some might say that they have very similar quality's, and very different qualities. In the book it talks about how the people in the south are very religious people, and that they turn to god to express their religious beliefs. In Las Vegas however that's not the case, Las Vegas is filled with sin all around the city. When it comes to drinking, gambling and or prostitution. These cities are so very different, they might have the same kinds of people but these people might have different morals and values. One thing that Las Vegas and the south which includes Charlotte, north Carolina have in common is that both cities are very modern, and thriving cities. both cities are booming whether its the population or the new buildings going up, these cities look towards the future in becoming more sustainable and larger each and everyday.

CHAPTER 8_ APPALACHIA AND THE OZARKS

clrsearch.com
contrarianedge.com
Las Vegas Nevada and the Appalachia have very similar and very different categories that go with each other. one category that is very similiar to both regions is money. For instance according to the charts the estimated income for a family in Las Vegas is less than 74,999. Whereas in Appalachia that number is below $15,000. This means that most of the population in Appalachia are living below the poverty level. Both of these regions are very different from one another, which makes it very hard to categorize them in the same group. Both have different aspects that contribute to their own economy.

CHAPTER 7_ THE BYPASSED EAST

m.eb.com

usa.usembassy.de
The bypassed east and Las Vegas are totally two different regions. One is surrounded by water whereas the other one is full of life. Unlike the bypassed east, Las Vegas is usually always hot, does not receive a large amount of rain, and is definitely not the city most think of when asked about mountain ranges.Las Vegas is not the ideal place for farming either as it is in the middle of the desert. The desert is so dry filled with sand and rocks.Even if Las Vegas had the right soil to grow plants for farming where would the irrigation of water come in to play. One can conclude that Las Vegas when compared to the bypassed east has nothing in common.

CHAPTER 5_ THE NORTH AMERICAN MANUFACTURING CORE

govegas.about.com

volcano.oregonstate.edu
Las Vegas is not a part of the North American manufacturing core. One of the main topics that are discussed in this chapter have to do with minerals.Even though by looking at Las Vegas as a city know one would ever suspect that Las Vegas would have mines filled with different kinds of minerals. The first mine is one that produces about 2 million tons of limestone a year, and the second mine produces gypsum at a rate of 1.1 million tons per year. Limestone is primarily used in the construction industry.Gypsum is used as a strengthening agent, especially when mixing concrete and materials. These minerals that are found in the mines in Las Vegas help the development of the city to grow and flourish.

_reverberations/index.php?page=3
Las Vegas, even though it is not considered a megalopolis, it's one of the many up and coming cities in the United States that is really growing and expanding. Downtown Las Vegas is full of high rise buildings as any other downtown city. Downtown is the center of Las Vegas. Another name for downtown city is Central Business District.Over the past 25 years Las Vegas has expanded. This expansion is due to the fact that more people are wanting to move to Las Vegas on a monthly basis. Which if more people are moving to Las Vegas then their will be more reasons why they need to expand further in the desert in the years to come. Las Vegas is a city that is booming like no other city with hotels being built left and right, its almost a city that never sleep's.

CHAPTER 3_ FOUNDATIONS OF HUMAN ACTIVITY

The main Indian tribe of the city is Paiute's. but before the Paiute's,"The Tudinu (or Desert People), ancestors of the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe, occupied the territory encompassing part of the Colorado River, most of Southeastern Nevada and parts of both Southern California and Utah". The Paiute Indians have lived on the land for tens of thousands of years. The Paiute tribe continues to live in Las Vegas, just a little north of downtown. The first Spanish explorer to set foot in Las Vegas was Rafael Rivera. Rafael named the city Las Vegas because when he arrived, the city was very green, and looked like a never ending meadow. The largest immigrant population that came to Las Vegas were Both the English and the Irish. They were both very influential in the mining and railroad industries. Their are a lot of religious backgrounds that contribute to the religious aspect of Las Vegas. The most dominant religion of Las Vegas has said to be Roman Catholic but their are also many other religious backgrounds that live in the area of Las Vegas.

When we think of Las Vegas we already assume that its a bad place filled with gambling, and sin. But there is more to this city than ,casino's and massive themed hotels. Las Vegas is surrounded by mountains.Mount Charleston is the highest peak of the Spring Mountains which is located west of Las Vegas. According to the book the climate of Las Vegas is in the category listed middle latitude desert. The coldest months in Vegas are December and January.During the hottest month of July temperatures have reached up to 118 degrees Fahrenheit.Since There is not much vegetation in Las Vegas do to the high temperatures, their are a lot of different kinds of plants that grow in the desert such as a cactus's and tumbleweeds.

 worldpropertychannel.com
Las Vegas is located in Nevada. It is close to other states such as California, Arizona, and Utah. Las Vegas has grown in size therefore becoming more urbanized.Las Vegas gives the region its unique character including the strip. The strip has contributed most to the urbanization of the city. The main economic activities are tourism and the construction of new facilities such as hotels, shopping centers, and new homes for people who live outside the strip. The tourism of Las Vegas has a big impact because Las Vegas is know for being the entertainment capital of the world and as 'sin city' is one of the many places that most people want to visit in the United States. The construction industry is constantly growing in Las Vegas. Everyday hotels are being demolished so that new hotels can be built.
